I thought of all the people who might be staring at the sea right then, wondering what they thought of when faced by such expanse. People tend to abbreviate experience that way; embalming fragments into metaphors that tell of either promise or remorse.

And the tides? Well, they always change.

*Ali al-Saho lost his wife and seven children on his escape from Syria to Europe. A current of rough waters sank their boat just off the coast of Turkey. He saw four of his children at the morgue. His wife and the others were all lost to the sea. This is for him.
